All about unemployment in Alabama
Checked against official sources: October 31, 2026.
Filing, step by step
Apply online in the Claimant Portal, or by phone at 1-866-234-5382 (Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central). Phones and computers are available at Alabama Career Centers. For initial claims filed from September 30, 2026, you must verify your identity through Login.gov, starting from the Claimant Portal, within 10 calendar days of filing.
When to file and when your claim starts
File as soon as you become unemployed; do not wait for your last paycheck. Claims are not backdated. Your benefit year starts on the Sunday of the week you file.
What to have ready
- Your Social Security number
- Your driver's license or Alabama ID number, and your mother's maiden name
- Your Alien Registration Card or work authorization number, if you are not a U.S. citizen
- Full information for your last two employers: names, complete addresses, phone numbers, and start and end dates
- Documents for any federal civilian work (SF-8, SF-50 or earnings statements), military service (DD-214 Member 4) or work in another state in the past 18 months
- Your bank routing and account number if you want direct deposit
Certify (claim your weeks)
How often: Weekly. File a weekly certification online in the Claimant Portal or by phone, from 12:01 a.m. Sunday to 5 p.m. Friday (Central) for the week before. A certification after 5 p.m. Friday is late. Report your work search contacts and all gross earnings for the week you earned them. If you miss two weeks or more, you must reopen your claim.
Your first payment
Most people get their first payment within three weeks if the claim is filed correctly and there are no eligibility issues. Direct deposits arrive within two business days; the AL Vantage debit card is mailed only after your claim is approved, which can delay your first payment by up to 10 days.
Register for work
Alabama residents must register with the Alabama Career Center in person or online at AlabamaWorks. The registration stays active for 90 days and must be renewed; it must be active during the weeks you draw benefits. If you live in another state, register with the job service in your area.

What applies in every state
- File with the unemployment program of the state where you worked. If you worked in another state or in several states, the agency in the state where you live now can tell you how to file with other states.
- It generally takes two to three weeks after you file to get your first payment. Some states require a one-week waiting period, so the second week you claim is the first week paid.
