How to file for unemployment in Connecticut

The online claim is usually the fastest way. Here is what to have ready, when your claim starts and what comes after you file.

Filing, step by step

Apply online through ReEmployCT (also reached at FileCTUI.com). You need an email account to set up your ReEmployCT account. If you do not have a computer, an American Job Center can help you file. For help, contact the Consumer Contact Center by phone, chat or scheduled call back.

When to file and when your claim starts

Apply as soon as you lose your job or your hours are cut. Your claim starts on the Sunday of the week you file, and your benefit year lasts 52 weeks.

What to have ready

  • An email address you can check (ReEmployCT sends a verification code)
  • Your work history for about the last 18 months, including any out-of-state employers
  • Information about your dependents, if you want a dependency allowance
  • Information about any severance, pay in lieu of notice or separation pay
  • Information about any pension or retirement pay you get or applied for
  • Bank account details if you want direct deposit

Certify (claim your weeks)

How often: Weekly. File a weekly claim online each week, starting the Sunday after you apply. You can file for the past week from Sunday through 11:59 p.m. Saturday. You will answer questions about work, earnings (gross pay, even if not yet paid), job offers and your work search. If you miss a week you can file one week late; if you miss more, call the Consumer Contact Center.

Your first payment

Most claims are processed within 10 days. Claims with out-of-state or federal wages, separation issues or appeals can take longer. You can choose direct deposit or a U.S. Bank ReliaCard prepaid debit card.

Register for work

When you file and agree to share your information, you are registered automatically in CTHires, the state's online job bank. Not registering can lead to a denial of benefits until you register. CTDOL encourages you to add your resume, which also counts as a work search activity.

What applies in every state

  • File with the unemployment program of the state where you worked. If you worked in another state or in several states, the agency in the state where you live now can tell you how to file with other states.
  • It generally takes two to three weeks after you file to get your first payment. Some states require a one-week waiting period, so the second week you claim is the first week paid.
