Filing, step by step
File online at huiclaims.hawaii.gov (create an account or log in as a claimant). If you need help, call the UI Call Center, visit a local claims office (bring photo ID), or make an appointment at labor.hawaii.gov/ui/appointments. You must verify your identity through Login.gov or in person at most post offices in Hawaii.
When to file and when your claim starts
Apply right away. Your claim starts on the Sunday of the week you apply. If you wait, you do not get credit for past weeks.
What to have ready
- If you are not a U.S. citizen: your alien registration number
- Your work history for the past 18 months: each employer's name, address, zip code and phone number, your dates of work and the reason you left
- Military: DD-214 Member 4 copy (do not delay filing if you do not have it)
- Federal workers: SF-8, SF-50 or pay stubs (you can send them later)
- Your bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit
Certify (claim your weeks)
How often: Every two weeks. File biweekly claim certifications online at huiclaims.hawaii.gov, answering the questions separately for each week. You can file starting the Sunday after you apply; each certification is due within 7 days after the end of the second week. Report gross earnings for each week you worked, even if not yet paid, and your work search contacts.
Your first payment
The first week of your benefit year is an unpaid waiting week; if you are still eligible, payments start the following week. Benefits are paid by direct deposit to your bank account or a prepaid debit card.
Register for work
Hawaii residents are automatically registered for work with HireNet Hawaii. If you live and look for work in another state, you must register with that state's employment service. Union members whose union refers them for work must have the union send Form UC-226 within 7 days of applying.

What applies in every state
- File with the unemployment program of the state where you worked. If you worked in another state or in several states, the agency in the state where you live now can tell you how to file with other states.
- It generally takes two to three weeks after you file to get your first payment. Some states require a one-week waiting period, so the second week you claim is the first week paid.
