How to file for unemployment in Idaho

The online claim is usually the fastest way. Here is what to have ready, when your claim starts and what comes after you file.

Checked against official sources: October 31, 2026.

Filing, step by step

Apply online in the Claimant Portal, 24 hours a day. For help, call 208-332-8942, visit a local IDOL office, or make an appointment with an unemployment insurance navigator.

When to file and when your claim starts

Apply as soon as you are out of work or your hours are cut. Your claim starts on the Sunday of the week you first file. Idaho does not allow backdating of weekly certifications.

What to have ready

  • Your name, Social Security number and contact information
  • Every employer you worked for in the past 2 years, with complete addresses and dates of employment, including employers in other states, military and federal employers
  • Military: your DD-214. Federal workers: your SF-8 and SF-50
  • Your bank information if you want direct deposit

Certify (claim your weeks)

How often: Weekly. File a weekly certification in the Claimant Portal for each week (Sunday to Saturday) during the following week; you have 7 full days. Report all wages for the week you worked and your work search actions. If you skip two weeks in a row, your claim goes inactive and you must reopen it.

Your first payment

If there are no eligibility issues and you file on time, your first payment is available about two and a half weeks after you apply.

Register for work

You must register for work at IdahoWorks.gov. You may also be required to meet with a workforce consultant; if you miss a required interview, your benefits stop.

What applies in every state

  • File with the unemployment program of the state where you worked. If you worked in another state or in several states, the agency in the state where you live now can tell you how to file with other states.
  • It generally takes two to three weeks after you file to get your first payment. Some states require a one-week waiting period, so the second week you claim is the first week paid.
