When to file and when your claim starts
File during the first week you want to be paid. Your claim starts on the Sunday of the week you file. IWD does not pay for weeks before that date and does not change the date for late applications.

- Your Social Security number
- Names, Social Security numbers, birth dates and relationships of up to four dependents
- Your full mailing address and phone number
- Bank account and routing number for direct deposit
- Your most recent employer's name (from pay stubs or W-2s); for temp work, the staffing agency's name
- Start and end dates and reason for leaving for your employers

- Military service in the last 18 months: DD 214 Member 4. Federal work: Standard Form 8 or 50
Certify (claim your weeks)
How often: Weekly. File a weekly certification online in IowaWORKS from Sunday 12:01 a.m. to Friday 11:59 p.m. (not on Saturday), starting the Sunday after you file. Report all gross wages for the week you earned them, plus your reemployment activities. If you miss a week, you are not paid for it.
Your first payment
Payments are deposited 4 to 5 business days after you file your weekly certification, if you meet all requirements, by direct deposit or on a U.S. Bank ReliaCard debit card.
Register for work
You must register for work in IowaWORKS when you apply: give your Social Security number and create an active resume employers can see. Keep your resume active for your whole claim.

What applies in every state
- File with the unemployment program of the state where you worked. If you worked in another state or in several states, the agency in the state where you live now can tell you how to file with other states.
- It generally takes two to three weeks after you file to get your first payment. Some states require a one-week waiting period, so the second week you claim is the first week paid.
