Filing, step by step
File online at the Unemployment Insurance Claims Portal. You must first verify your identity with ID.me (have your email, Social Security number, a photo ID and one more ID document). If you cannot file online, call 502-564-2900. Filing is always free.
When to file and when your claim starts
File as soon as possible after you lose your job or your hours are cut a lot. Your claim's effective date is the Sunday of the week you complete your application. If you start an online claim, you must finish it before midnight Saturday or start over the next week. Benefits for weeks before you filed are paid only if you ask for backdating and show good cause.
What to have ready
- Your Social Security number or Alien Registration number
- Your date of birth, mailing address, phone number and email address
- For every employer in the last 18 months: company name (or temporary agency), mailing address, phone number, start and end dates, and why you no longer work there
- Details of any retirement pension you receive
- A list of other states you worked in, if any
- Federal workers: SF-8 and SF-50. Military: DD-214 Member 4
- Union members: contractor and union details
Certify (claim your weeks)
How often: Every two weeks. Request benefits every two weeks in the claims portal. Your first request is due 13 days after you file. Kentucky benefit weeks run Sunday through Saturday; you answer questions for two weeks at a time, and you can make each request Sunday through Friday. Report all gross wages for the week you earned them. Only people excused from work search can request benefits by phone. Keep requesting while your claim is reviewed or appealed.
Your first payment
If you are eligible, payment usually arrives 2 to 3 days after you request benefits. You can choose direct deposit or a U.S. Bank ReliaCard debit card (the default). If you choose the debit card, your first payment comes as a paper check.
Register for work
If you live in Kentucky, create an account at Citizen Connect, finish your work registration, and upload proof through Document Upload in the claims portal within 10 days of filing. If you live in another state, register with that state's workforce agency and send proof within 10 days. Union members whose union finds them work and people with a definite return-to-work date within 16 weeks do not need to send proof.

What applies in every state
- File with the unemployment program of the state where you worked. If you worked in another state or in several states, the agency in the state where you live now can tell you how to file with other states.
- It generally takes two to three weeks after you file to get your first payment. Some states require a one-week waiting period, so the second week you claim is the first week paid.

Is there a waiting week in Kentucky?
Yes. Every new claim serves one waiting week: no benefits are paid for the first week you are eligible, and you must request benefits for that week for it to count. Under state law, the waiting week is paid near the end of your claim, once your remaining balance is equal to or less than one week's payment.
