How to file for unemployment in Mississippi

The online claim is usually the fastest way. Here is what to have ready, when your claim starts and what comes after you file.

Checked against official sources: October 31, 2026.

Filing, step by step

File online at any time through MDES's online claim services (you must first register for a user name and password), or call the MDES Contact Center at 601-493-9427, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. People with military, federal or other-state wages may file by phone.

When to file and when your claim starts

File as soon as you become unemployed. Your claim is effective the Sunday before the day you file (or that Sunday if you file on a Sunday). A claim can be backdated only for good cause, meaning circumstances beyond your control, and you must report within 7 calendar days of the first chance MDES gave you.

What to have ready

  • Your Social Security number
  • Names, addresses and phone numbers of all employers in the last 18 months
  • The dates you worked for each employer and why you left
  • Your Alien Registration number or visa number, if you are not a U.S. citizen

Certify (claim your weeks)

How often: Weekly. File a weekly certification online after each Sunday-to-Saturday week ends. Report gross earnings for the week you did the work. A weekly claim must be filed by the Friday after the week claimed (MDES may accept it within 14 days if there is no availability issue). If you do not file for 3 or more weeks in a row, you must reopen your claim.

Your first payment

If you are eligible, you can expect your first payment after you file your second weekly certification, because the first week is an unpaid waiting week. Payments usually arrive within 5 days after you file a weekly certification.

Register for work

You must register for work with MDES (the WIN Job Center system) unless you are on a temporary layoff of less than 4 weeks, in approved training, out of work because of a labor dispute, or have a specific return-to-work date. Failing to register can delay or deny your benefits.

What applies in every state

  • File with the unemployment program of the state where you worked. If you worked in another state or in several states, the agency in the state where you live now can tell you how to file with other states.
  • It generally takes two to three weeks after you file to get your first payment. Some states require a one-week waiting period, so the second week you claim is the first week paid.
