How to file for unemployment in Nebraska

The online claim is usually the fastest way. Here is what to have ready, when your claim starts and what comes after you file.

Checked against official sources: October 31, 2026.

Filing, step by step

File online at NEworks: register as an individual, enter your work history for the last 18 months, and create or upload a resume (plan about an hour). If you do not have internet access or need assistive technology, a local Job Center can help.

When to file and when your claim starts

File in the week your job ends or your hours are cut. Your claim is effective the week you apply; you cannot be paid for weeks before you file.

What to have ready

  • Your home mailing address, phone number and email address
  • Your driver's license or state ID card number
  • Bank routing and account numbers, if you want direct deposit
  • Names, mailing addresses and city of each employer in the last 18 months, your start and end dates and the reason you left each job
  • Your wages from each employer in the last 18 months
  • If you are not a citizen: your employment authorization number and expiration date (documents from USCIS)
  • Military service in the last 18 months: DD-214 Member 4. Federal civilian work: SF-8 or SF-50 and your total federal wages

Certify (claim your weeks)

How often: Weekly. File a weekly claim in NEworks after each Sunday-to-Saturday week ends, starting as early as Sunday and no later than the following Saturday. Report gross wages for the week you did the work. If approved, payment comes within 2 to 3 business days.

Your first payment

NDOL may take up to 21 days to process a new claim. The first week after you file is an unpaid waiting week. Payments go by direct deposit or a U.S. Bank ReliaCard prepaid card.

Register for work

When you apply in NEworks you must create a resume, and it must stay searchable and set to "online" every week you claim. If you live in another state not bordering Nebraska, register for employment services in your own state.

What applies in every state

  • File with the unemployment program of the state where you worked. If you worked in another state or in several states, the agency in the state where you live now can tell you how to file with other states.
  • It generally takes two to three weeks after you file to get your first payment. Some states require a one-week waiting period, so the second week you claim is the first week paid.
