How to file for unemployment in Ohio
The online claim is usually the fastest way. Here is what to have ready, when your claim starts and what comes after you file.

Filing, step by step
Apply online through the unemployment login for workers (you need an OHID account) or by phone at 1-877-644-6562. You must pass identity proofing; if the online check fails, you can usually present documents at a U.S. Post Office or to ODJFS.
When to file and when your claim starts
File in the first week you are totally or partially unemployed; an application filed before your unemployment starts is disallowed. Your benefit year starts on the Sunday of the week you file a valid application. You cannot backdate your own application online; ODJFS backdates only in limited cases.
What to have ready
- The name and address of your most recent employer
- Your own statement of why you separated from that employer
- Whether you owe child support
- Proof of identity and a valid Social Security number
Certify (claim your weeks)
How often: Weekly. Request benefits each week online, by chat, by phone with a representative or the automated phone system, or by text message when available. A weekly claim is on time if filed no later than 21 days after the Saturday of the week claimed. If you go three weeks without filing, your claim has a break and must be restarted.
Your first payment
Payments go to your bank account or a U.S. Bank ReliaCard debit card; when your payment shows a paid date, money should arrive within 24 to 48 hours. No benefits are paid for the waiting week.
Register for work
If you must search for work, an OhioMeansJobs.com account is created for you when you apply. You must upload a complete, searchable resume by week 4 of your claim and complete the Career Profile survey by week 8, or benefits will be denied unless you have a valid reason or did similar activities earlier in your benefit year.
Law: Ohio Rev. Code 4141.28, 4141.29(A)

What applies in every state
- File with the unemployment program of the state where you worked. If you worked in another state or in several states, the agency in the state where you live now can tell you how to file with other states.
- It generally takes two to three weeks after you file to get your first payment. Some states require a one-week waiting period, so the second week you claim is the first week paid.
