When to file and when your claim starts
File as soon as you are out of work or your hours are cut. Your benefit year starts with the week you file a valid claim (weeks run Sunday to Saturday).

Certify (claim your weeks)
How often: Weekly. Request payment each week through UI Online or by calling 401-415-6772. To use the phone, you create a PIN during your first week of eligibility. Report all gross earnings for the week you worked, even if not yet paid; report tips, bonuses and commissions for the week you receive them.
Your first payment
You can choose an electronic payment card or direct deposit.
Register for work
You must be registered with reemployment services. If you live in or commute to Rhode Island, DLT registers you when you file. Others must register with their home state. You may be selected for the required RESEA program.

What applies in every state
- File with the unemployment program of the state where you worked. If you worked in another state or in several states, the agency in the state where you live now can tell you how to file with other states.
- It generally takes two to three weeks after you file to get your first payment. Some states require a one-week waiting period, so the second week you claim is the first week paid.
