Filing, step by step

Apply online at Jobs4TN.gov through your Unemployment Claimant e-Services account. For help, call the Help Desk at 844-224-5818, use the chat on Jobs4TN.gov, or visit an American Job Center.

When to file and when your claim starts

You may file the first day after you are separated from your job or after your employer significantly cuts your hours. Your Monetary Determination arrives in your e-Services account within one business day.

What to have ready

  • Your Social Security number and identification
  • Information about your employers for the past 18 months, including the separating employer's name, address and phone number
  • Your reason for separation (quit, fired, lack of work, laid off or job eliminated, etc.)
  • DD-214 Member 4 if you served in the military in the past 18 months
  • Your bank routing and account number if you want direct deposit

Certify (claim your weeks)

How often: Weekly. Each Sunday a new weekly certification for the prior week opens in your e-Services account. Certify every week, even before you are approved, and report your 4 work search activities and any earnings. If you wait more than 3 weeks to certify, your claim is closed and missed weeks can no longer be paid.

Your first payment

Benefits are paid by Way2Go debit card (mailed within 7 to 10 days of your application) or direct deposit. The first eligible week is a waiting week that is paid together with your fourth consecutive eligible week.

What applies in every state

  • File with the unemployment program of the state where you worked. If you worked in another state or in several states, the agency in the state where you live now can tell you how to file with other states.
  • It generally takes two to three weeks after you file to get your first payment. Some states require a one-week waiting period, so the second week you claim is the first week paid.

Is there a waiting week in Tennessee?

Yes. If your claim is approved, the first week you certify for is a waiting week. It is not paid unless you certify for and are eligible for four weeks in a row; then, with your fourth week, you get a double payment covering the waiting week and the fourth week.
